Wire EDM or Electrical Discharge Machining is the process in which an electrical spark is created between an electrode, which typically consists of a brass wire measuring in the thousandths of an inch, and an electrically conductive workpiece. This spark, when fully submerged in dielectric fluid and aided by modern computer controls, creates an erosion of the workpiece.
Wire EDM has a number of benefits over that of traditional machining. However, depending on the work performed, these benefits can come with an increase in cost associated with the technology. In general, traditional machining is preferable, if viable.
